Snapper, especially Red Snapper, are the best known of the fish you’ll encounter when bottom fishing on a Pensacola offshore fishing charter. These tasty fish are plentiful off the coast of Pensacola, especially around wrecks and the many artificial reefs specifically created as habitat for bottom dwelling species such as snapper.
There are many species of snapper found in Florida but the most common caught in the Pensacola area are Red Snapper, Mangrove (Gray) Snapper, Lane Snapper and Vermilion Snapper. The most popular snapper of all caught near Pensacola are the beautiful Red Snapper. Weighing in from 5-30+ lbs, Red Snapper are very powerful and are a lot of fun to catch. While Red Snapper are encountered year round when bottom fishing offshore near Pensacola, open season for "keepers" is usually once a year during the summer months.
Mangrove Snapper, Lane Snapper and Vermilion Snapper season is usually year round and they have bigger daily bag limits than Red Snapper. Like Red Snapper, Mangrove Snapper can grow quite large while Lane and Vermilion Snapper are considerably smaller but just as delicious as their larger cousins.
While fishing for snapper is best over offshore wrecks and reefs, Mangrove Snapper also inhabit inshore waters such as Pensacola Bay. Because of the unusually deep waters of Pensacola Bay, in some places exceeding 50 feet in depth, Red Snapper also have been caught in Pensacola Bay. However, the best all around fishing for snapper is bottom fishing offshore with an experienced fishing guide like Captain Brandy.
